Waseda University Part-time Job Guide: Education Edition 📚✨
Taro Blog
Hi there! I’m Junpei Taro, the writer of this blog.
I’m just an ordinary guy, currently studying at Waseda University.
Until high school, I lived in the countryside. So before moving to Tokyo, I had a lot of worries, like:
“Can I even survive the crazy packed trains?”
“Is Tokyo full of scary people?”
I was both super excited and super nervous.
But maybe because I came from that kind of background, I feel I can share the kind of information that high school students aiming for Waseda—and their parents—really want to know.
Things like:
- “What’s Waseda really like?”
- “Is exam prep honestly that tough?”
- “How much does it actually cost to live alone in Tokyo?”
I don’t just want to repeat what you can already find online—I want to share my honest, real-life experiences and the truth behind student life here.
Getting into Waseda and adjusting to college life wasn’t always easy. There were ups and downs. But looking back now, I can truly say:
“I’m so glad I came to Waseda.”
I hope this blog becomes a helpful guide that lights the way for your own Waseda journey.
And if you ever have a question, don’t hesitate to leave a comment—I’d be happy to chat! 😊
Introduction 🎯
The number one part-time job ranking at Waseda University is undoubtedly education-related jobs such as cram school instructors and private tutors! Most Waseda students have probably worked as cram school instructors at some point. Today, we’ll thoroughly explain education-related part-time jobs including cram school instructors, private tutors, and after-school programs.
There are many cram schools around Waseda University, so you have plenty of options!
Cram School Instructor Job Description 📝
Main Duties
- Teaching classes
- Assisting with classes
- Tutoring
Teaching Classes
Teaching requires preparation and communication skills but offers higher pay. You need to research textbooks and plan lessons, and you need communication skills to teach students effectively.
Assisting with Classes
During classes, you watch students, help struggling students, and check homework submissions. The pay is higher than administrative work but not very high overall.
Tutoring
You mostly sit and answer questions when they come up. The hourly wage is low, but you can often do your own homework during work hours, making it a good job for studying while earning money.
Cram School Pros and Cons 💡
Pros
- Can monetize past studies
- Enjoyable teaching for smart Waseda students
- Good interaction with kids for child-lovers
- High hourly wage (over 2000 yen at some places)
Cons
- Fixed class schedules
- No late-night classes
- No classes during school hours
- Limited shift opportunities
An hourly wage of 2000 yen is excellent, even by Tokyo standards!
Private Tutoring Reality 🏠
In One Word…
Good time efficiency but poor cost efficiency!
In-Person Private Tutoring
- Often over 2000 yen per hour
- Can earn 3000-4000 yen for 90-120 minutes
- Usually weekly 90-minute courses
- Travel time is a disadvantage
Even with 4 sessions per month, you only earn 12,000 yen. If you spend 30 minutes traveling for a 90-minute lesson, your effective hourly wage drops to about 1000 yen.
Online Private Tutoring
- Slightly lower hourly wage but no travel time
- Just need a computer and internet at home
- Can work late at night
- Limited direct communication with families
Private Contract Tutoring
Without intermediary companies, some earn 4000-5000 yen per hour! But this comes with greater responsibility.
The Joy of Private Tutoring ❤️
My Personal Experience
I do both in-person and online private tutoring!
I continue in-person tutoring because the family provides dinner. With only 40 minutes of travel time round trip, plus getting a bento-style dinner, it’s worth about 1000 yen extra. This is incredibly helpful for someone living alone.
Rewards
- Seeing children’s growth
- Long-term improvement in academic performance
- Gratitude from parents
I once had a boy who never made positive comments about tests suddenly say “I think I can do well on this test,” which his mother shared with me. It was incredibly rewarding.
After-School Program Work 🎈
Basic Information
After-school programs are more like childcare than education. There are many around Waseda University, often attached to or near elementary schools, so you can likely find one nearby regardless of where you live.
Job Content
- Watching children
- Playing with children
- Preparing activities
- Ensuring children’s safety
- Preparing events
- Helping with homework
Challenges
Ensuring children’s safety is the most important and difficult aspect. Elementary students are energetic and unpredictable – they might start fighting or wander off without notice. You might also face harsh words from children, making it difficult for those who don’t find children cute.
The Reality
On the flip side, you just need to watch and play with children to earn money. For those who love children, it could be a dream job! My after-school program pays around 1400 yen per hour and is within 5 minutes’ walk, making it very satisfying.
Common Characteristics 🔄
Common Disadvantage
Limited shift opportunities! Education requires many adults, so you can’t get many shifts. Private tutoring is fixed once you’re assigned, usually just once a week for a few hours, so you can’t earn much.
Unlike restaurant jobs where you can get many shifts, this is a drawback of education-related jobs.
Future Benefits
Since you’re involved in children’s education, it’s excellent practice for future teachers!
Summary 🌟
Education-related part-time jobs offer more than just income for Waseda students!
Recommended for Those Who:
- Love teaching
- Love children
- Want to become teachers
- Seek high hourly wages
- Want to work nearby
Not Suitable for Those Who:
- Want to earn a lot of money
- Want many shifts
- Don’t like children
Considering the good hourly wage and educational experience, these jobs are perfect for Waseda students! Find the education-related job that suits you and have a fulfilling university life!
